Ștefania Mărăcineanu - A great Romanian physicist

Google Doodle pays tribute to Stefania Maracineanu, know about the Romanian physicist.

On her 140th birth anniversary, Google Doodle on Saturday honoured Romanian physicist Stefania Maracineanu. Born on June 18, 1882, Maracineanu was one of the stellar woman of science known for her unparalleled “knowledge of precise electrometric measurements”. She is known for her research alongside Marie Curie.

Born in Romania’s capital Bucharest, not much is known about Maracineanu’s personal life, but she is said to have witnessed unhappy growing up years. She received degree in physical and chemical sciences from University of Bucharest in 1910. He senior thesis was titled ‘Light interference and its application to wavelength measurement’.

After graduating, Maracineanu taught at high schools in different Romanian cities. She travelled to Paris for further her studies after the first World War. She studied radioactivity with the famed Marie Curie at Sorbonne in 1919. She did research work with Curie at the Radium Institute until 1926, from where she also received her Ph. D.

Maracineanu did research on the half-life of polonium and developed an observation about radioactive isotopes which was the base for the 1935 Nobel Prize for Joliot-Curies for discovered of artificial discovery. However, Maracineanu was the first to make the discovery, as data show
