Viscount Kuroda Seiki (黒田 清輝, August 9, 1866 – July 15, 1924) was a Japanese painter and teacher, noted for bringing Western art theory and practice to a wide Japanese audience.
Asai’s contemporary Kuroda Seiki studied in France under Raphael Collin and was among the most prominent exponents of a style that was strongly influenced by Impressionism in its informality and its use of lighter, brighter colours.
Japanese artist Kuroda Seiki is the subject of the latest Google Doodle on the 156th anniversary of his birth.
Born in Kagoshima, Japan in 1866, Kuroda was adopted at birth by his uncle, who moved him to his estate in Tokyo.
Kuroda then moved to Paris at the age of 18 to study law, but after two years decided to pursue painting instead.
He spent a decade in France learning to paint in the Western academic style, honing his craft during a period of self-discovery.
Kuroda returned to Japan in 1893, bringing new life to the Western-style art scene in many Japanese cities.
