Marie Tharp

 Marie Tharp was a pioneering American geologist and oceanographic cartographer who helped create the first scientific map of the Atlantic Ocean floor.

Before her work most people assumed that the bottom of the sea was flat and featureless, but her mapping revealed the presence of huge underwater mountain chains, including the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The discovery of these previously unknown features was ground-breaking!
