Global tension rises as missile lands in Poland
Since 1996, first as a partner and as of 1999, a full member of NATO, Poland has taken part in 14 missions and Allied operations.
Poland has said that a missile strike that killed two people in its territory close to the border with Ukraine was “not an intentional attack”, and was likely to have come from Ukrainian air defence systems, narrowly averting a geopolitical crisis that could have led to a direct conflict between the West and Russia.
With a budget of over US$14 billion in 2022, Poland is ranked 20th in the world in terms of military expenditures and is among the nine NATO member states that have maintained their military spending above the required 2% of annual GDP.
Poland is known for being the home of delicious pierogi, former pope John Paul II, and
Europe's most ancient old-growth forest. It is also a country rich in unique history and stunning geography, from the Tatra mountains to the Baltic Sea.
Since then, the U.S. presence in Europe has grown by about one quarter. Germany now hosts nearly 40,000 American forces. About 10,000 are now in Poland.
