One of the participant raised a point, "What use is poetry? What does it do ?he asked. A pertinent question ,we use mathematics to do our daily calculations and much else besides. We employ science to do brain surgery, or build rocket, ships. They all serve a useful purpose. But what purpose does poetry serve? The answer ,if there is one ,might lie in poetry itself. A favorites' poem of mine ,written by WH Auden, commemorates the death in 1939 of the Irish poet W.B Yeats. In doing so ,it addresses the question as to what poetry in general is ,what it can mean to us, and of what use it is ,if any. "For poetry makes nothing happen", writes Auden," It survives/In the valley of its making where executives/Would never want to temper, flows on south/From ranches of isolation and the busy briefs./Raw towns that we believe and die in ,it survives ,/A way of happening, a mouth." ; So what's this ?Is the poet giving up on his chosen vocation ,on his own poetry and on poetry as a whole? Not quite, The poem was written at the beginning of the year in which later the globe would be plunged in to a murderous conflict called world war 2.It was a time of foreboding, of an impending and seemingly inevitable doom which bred both cynicism and despair. "The living nations wait/Each sequestered in its hate.../And the seas of pity lie/Locked and frozen in each eye.". So in the time of looming global crises what role did the poet and poetry have to play.? " With the forming of a verse./Make a vineyard of the curse.../In the deserts of the heart/Let the healing fountain start./In the prison of his days/Teach a free man how to praise.'" The last two lines contain the essence of the poem, and of poetry in its entirety. The 'prison' of days Auden writes about refers not just to specific time and place but the universal human condition ,the fever and fret of every day anxieties and fear and insecurities which engage us in our day to day lives ,each one locked in a solitary confinement of our own making. What more news will today bring, of the pandemic, of scams .and scandals ,of social and political confrontation, and how will I be affected by it all.? Only too often our mental gaze is set not on the horizon of hope but cast downwards on the uncertain and daunting daily path we tread, a tunnel vision which in prison of our days makes us misremember the essential freedom of the human spirit. Poetry like music ,is a form of secular prayer, a giving of praise to a heighten awareness dormant within us.. Like prayer ,poetry is a way of recapturing a forgotten rapture. Of what use is poetry? Of nothing much .Other than transforming the humdrum of existence into the exaltation of being. In poetry we glorify objects whereas in advertising we glorify products are services. Poetry is best words in best order and advertising is promotion of goods by best words. Poem is life's feeling and by advertising you feel the product. Literature is mirror of society and in advertising we see model society.
